Virtual Reality Offers Realistic Training for First Responders to Handle Chaos and Mass Casualty Events

A new virtual reality (VR) training program is helping first responders to prepare for mass casualty events and replicate the chaos they may encounter.

In recent years, mass casualty incidents have become increasingly common, with the FBI reporting a 100% increase in active shooter incidents since 2017. First responders need to be trained to act fast, and until recently, this training involved a significant amount of resources, space, and time. However, thanks to a new VR training program, trainees can experience real-life scenarios and be better prepared in case of a disaster.

Paramedic Joshua Cooper is one of the trainees who uses the VR program. He believes that the training provides him with a realistic view of coping with mass casualty events. “It’s just not something we see every day, but when you find yourself in that situation, you want to be prepared for it,” Cooper said.

The new VR program allows first responders to experience realistic scenarios that can be customized with varying numbers of victims, injuries, and real-world distractions. The program uses artificial intelligence that simulates patient responses based on their condition, providing an immersive experience for trainees. The controllers vibrate at different rates based on patients’ statuses, such as their heart rate, to create a more realistic simulation.

Once the training is complete, the system provides immediate feedback to the trainees. The VR training program is already in use by several fire and EMS departments in the United States, and medical experts and developers hope to continue improving the system to better handle active gunshot drills and stop bleeding incidents in places like schools and churches.
