HTC has released a teaser for its new Vive Tracker, which now features auto-tracking and does not require the use of base stations.
The Vive Tracker is popularly used in custom VR software to keep track of objects in the real world, and by VRChat users to track various body parts such as the torso, legs, feet, and so on.
The Vive Tracker 3.0 released in 2021 is available for $130, but it requires SteamVR Tracking base stations which are priced at $135 each.
The new “Self-Tracking Tracker” is scheduled to be released in the third quarter of this year. It features two wide-field-of-view cameras and an onboard processor for positional tracking from the inside out, similar to a Quest Pro controller albeit without any buttons, triggers, haptics or sticks. This means there is no need for base stations or to be in view of the headset’s cameras.
The tracker will connect to a specific USB-C dongle that is capable of supporting up to five trackers concurrently. It is built to support the OpenXR standard, thus not requiring an HTC headset.
According to HTC, the Self-Tracking Tracker is less than 100 grams in weight and approximately 50% smaller than the Vive Tracker 3.0. However, it is not intended to replace the Vive Tracker 3.0, but sold simultaneously with it. Inside-out tracking based on cameras typically struggles in plain rooms lacking high-contrast features or in low-light conditions, while base stations function well in nearly all environments.
Mounting with 1/4″ threaded screw, which is the same mount used for cameras and speakers, is supported by the new Vive Tracker, as with previous models. It also has a new clip-on mount that sticks magnetically, and HTC intends to release CAD files, enabling users to 3D-print their own mounts.
HTC says that the Self-Tracking Tracker remains in the developmental phase and hasn’t released information on pricing just yet.
