Many of the top-performing virtual reality (VR) games on Meta Quest achieved their success through emphasis on creative concepts and unique gameplay. More than forty Quest games have grossed over $10 million each. At the Game Developers Conference, Meta emphasized these statistics as evidence of the strength of the Meta Quest ecosystem. Oculus Publishing currently provides funding for 150 VR games, having already invested over $1.5 billion.
Speaking at the conference, Chris Pruett, director of content for third-party games, noted that there is a correlation between quality and sales for VR games. This statement was echoed by Meta, and I believe they are both right in their assessment.
Does Quality Lead to Success on the Quest 2?
Some people might be skeptical of such a claim, especially since simple titles like Gorilla Tag or Among Us have sold so well. However, a significant number of successful VR games became hits through the use of creative and engaging concepts that took advantage of the unique features of the VR medium.
The zombie survival RPG game The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is an excellent example of this. The game achieved sales of over $50 million in October 2022 by taking advantage of two factors that made the story that much more immersive in VR. Firstly, life-size “walkers” commanded more respect in VR, and secondly, it was more fun to fight them in physics-based combat and dismember them with high-impact weapons. The action-packed game also used motion control for tasks such as disassembling and cleaning firearms, adding another layer of immersion for players.
Resident Evil as a VR Sales Driver
The VR remake of Resident Evil 4 by Armature Studios is also among the top-performing VR games. It surpassed one million in sales within 24 hours of release and is the fastest-selling VR game in the history of the Meta Quest 1 and 2. The game features more precise weapon handling and an adjusted inventory, creating a new gaming experience for players.
Meta must be careful not to lose too many classic players to Sony, as players have higher expectations for visuals than even major projects like Assassin’s Creed Nexus can achieve on Quest 2’s mobile chip. Even so, there is still untapped graphical potential in Quest 2, as VR games like Red Matter 2 have shown.
Mass Market or Creativity?
It would be great if major productions like Ubisoft pushed VR further into the mass market. Such successes could also make the medium less risky for smaller studios seeking to develop new and innovative VR gaming concepts. However, it is important to note that VR gaming should not fall back on typical AAA titles or nostalgia-inducing games that already dominate PC and console gaming.
Even detractors of simple games like Beat Saber (#1 bestseller), Among Us VR (#3), or Gorilla Tag should give these titles credit for becoming surprise hits through unique and creative gameplay mechanics. The willingness to experiment still present in VR games reminds me pleasantly of the good old days of the C64 and Amiga, where concepts weren’t forced into fixed genres and playstyles.
